Waipi‘o Valley

Waipi‘o Overlook

Situated on the northeast corner of the island where the Hāmākua Coastline road ends, this valley is sacred to Native Hawaiians. With no phone service or power, the valley offers a glimpse into a time before Hawai‘i was heavily developed. The area is still home to taro farming and pristine wilderness. This stunning valley was a filming location for movies like Avatar and Waterworld. The overlook provides an amazing view of this remote and beautiful landscape.

Entering Waipi‘o Valley

For the adventurous, Waipi‘o Valley offers pristine lands perfect for camping, kayaking, and hiking. Plan ahead for this trip:

  • Access: 4WD only, or hike in and out via a VERY steep road.

  • Camping: Overnight camping is by permit only in the next valley over, Waimanu, accessed by a steep switchback trail called the Z Trail. Campsites on the water are beautiful.

  • Waterfalls: The valley has five waterfalls. Access to some requires crossing private property, so obtain permission from property owners and sign a waiver of liability.

Be prepared for rigorous hikes and a lush jungle landscape with waterfalls, rivers, and a sense of being completely away from everything. Planning ahead is crucial for crossing private property and obtaining camping permits.

Waimea Restaurants:

  • GJ’s Roadside BBQ Only open on Saturdays and Sundays, located east of Big Island Brewhaus. Look for the smoke and delicious aromas. Known for huli chicken, pork ribs, and beef ribs, especially on Sundays in a gas station parking lot just south of Honoka‘a.

  • Waimea Coffee Company Offers the best chai latte on the island. Located in a shopping center with charming shops.

  • Big Island Brewhaus A local microbrewery and Mexican restaurant with a lively atmosphere.

  • Merriman’s A fancy, highly-rated restaurant owned by a local chef, known for its farm-to-table cuisine.
